Elections in previous decades
Until the mid-2010, the vast majority of voters turned out on a single day and campaigning wound up the night before Election Day. Voters experienced all of the campaign before they voted. Each voter could have the same amount of information about the candidates on the ballot and any scandals associated with them.
While candidates might drop out or die before Election Day and new -- unsavory -- information might come out about a candidate, voters were on a relatively level playing field.
