At Doctors of Democracy (DODO), our team of democracy experts elevates the conversation around democracy reform by injecting humility, humor, and nuanced historical and comparative perspectives into a polarized field, all without pushing a pet reform agenda.
Our name plays homage to our four-step diagnostic approach:
Reflect on values to build self-awareness.
Identify the “symptoms” that negatively affect democracy.
Diagnose the underlying “ailments” responsible for those symptoms.
Prescribe evidence-based actions and reforms to facilitate a lasting recovery.
The power of the people, the democratic process, and strong democratic institutions.
The importance of self-reflection and personal growth.
The diagnostic approach.
The transformative capacity of education.
The power of change.
DODO is unique among democracy reform groups in that we combine hands-on experience (in academia, democracy reform and civic engagement activism, and government) and academic expertise in democratic and governing institutions with the absence of our own reform agenda.
Instead we believe that institutional choices depend on context and should be decided according to local residents' values and goals.
Promoting civic education and engagement.
We provide engaging, accessible, and evidence-based resources and interactive apps on democratic institutions and electoral reform for stakeholder and public learning.
Encouraging self-growth, humilty, nuance, and humor.
We provide opportunities for reflection, refinement, and personal growth, while incorporating fun into all of our activities. Democracy is something we actively enjoy and we want you to too!
Educating and training democracy reform movements.
Utilizing our network of democracy scholars, we engage with the reform movement by providing technical assistance and learning resources aimed at improving data literacy and expanding the use of peer-reviewed studies in the democracy reform movement.
Supporting educational exchanges and democracy scholars.
We actively develop programs to facilitate educational exchanges focused on shared learning about democratic institutions and maintain a collaborative network of democracy scholars. We support them with an organizing hub, a data clearinghouse, and opportunities to present research to non-academic audiences.
