We have observed firsthand how participation in reform movements can be disheartening for even the most diligent citizen. The political economy of the democracy reform space creates incentives to trash every aspect of the status quo to create a sense of crisis and maximize the chances of a reform's success. Miracle cures — ones that allegedly solve every aspect of the manufactured crisis — are promoted. Concerned citizens buy-in, come to believe in the cure, as well as think the worst about American democracy. They invest their time and energy to save it. Promised cures aren't adopted — or they are, but they fail to deliver the paradise promised. Participants are left jaded and cynical; almost as if they have been punished for their civic engagement.
Currently in the concept phase, Demognostics will offer concerned citizens and students a vehicle to learn about government and their own values while connecting them to local and national civic groups. The app empowers users to move beyond inactive disgruntlement to self-reflection and growth, while offering ideas and courses of action to make their democracy better.
We are currently seeking $200,000 to move Demognostics from concept to a functional Alpha Prototype.
This "Seed Phase" is dedicated to the three pillars that make our app unique:
Academic expertise (40%): Stipends for the political scientists and historians conducting and reviewing the meta-analyses.
Technical architecture (35%): Engineering the interface between the chatbot (Dr. Dahl) and our democracy algorithm (undergirded by the scoring matrix).
User testing and co-creation (25%): Workshops with our two target demographics (students and concerned citizens) to ensure the tone is helpful not preachy.
Since our incorporation in 2023, DODO has worked tirelessly to establish ourselves as a trusted, nonpartisan actor that helps students, educators, reformers, and everyday citizens to engage meaningfully with democracy reform.
DODO is a natural home for Demognostics because we combine hands-on experience (in academia, democracy reform and civic engagement activism, and government) and academic training in democratic and governing institutions with the absence of our own reform agenda (We do note advance one reform idea over another, but instead believe that institutional choices should depend on context and citizens' values and goals).
To protect and strengthen U.S. democracy by improving the conversation around democracy reform: injecting humility, humor, and nuanced historical and comparative perspectives into a polarized field, all without pushing a pet reform agenda.
Our leadership team brings deep academic expertise in democracy and elections, as well as practical experience in government, reform groups, and election administration. They are supported by an enthusiastic and dedicated team, stretched across the country with diverse experiences and skills.
Amid growing polarization and declining trust in institutions, we need more than easy anger and outrage. Demognostics might just be a way to transform frustration into active, informed citizenship.
